Journeys Through My Eyes: (Post)Colonial Legacies

Over these next couple of weeks, we are featuring student perspectives on the Global Journeys virtual immersion experience this year.

We are continuing with Journeys 2021 #JourneysPostcolonial21:

We were fortunate enough to have two students share their experience in this class.

Kit Tures ’24 shared their reflection and experience via an Instagram takeover:

“My journeys experience was meaningful because I enjoyed the broad cultural overview that we covered. Our speaker was very engaging, and I learned an incredible amount about the gender disparity in Martinique. I especially liked the attitude that the speaker held towards Carnival and the freedom it allows everyone.”

Maleah Slade ’24 also shared her experience:

“(Post)Colonial Legacies allowed me to take part in cooking classes that not only taught how to prepare dishes from the domestic/international locations, but also taught the history of those locations. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and answered every question my classmates and I had. This Journeys trip allowed me to experience the culture and tradition of Martinique and New Orleans from the comfort of my own home.”

Journeys Through My Eyes: Islamic Art & Culture

Over the next couple of weeks we will feature the perspective of students who participated in this year’s virtual Global Immersion experience.

We start with Journeys 2021 #IslamicArtCulture:

Afnan Mahmud ’24 shared her experience with us:

“I had a great time participating in the workshop throughout the week. We learned the basics of calligraphy, geometric art, and Arabian Coffee! We also cooked CousCous and made hummus from scratch. Not to mention learning illumination art and the basics of belly dancing! The smell of cloves in my kitchen will forever remind me of the people we met and the knowledge we gained from them while having fun! It was a great bonding experience for me. And although it was virtual, Dr. Iqbal tried her best to make peak week special for us and it showed! I am very lucky to have received the appropriate tools to participate in the workshops.”

Global Journeys Goes Virtual

Update March 8: As the class of 2024 is connecting with people, communities, and sites around the globe you can follow along by joining the ASC Global 2021 Facebook Group.

In a bit less than a week, Agnes Scott’s first-year class will begin their week-long Global Immersion Experience. Of course, no virtual learning format can substitute for the stimulation provided by physical travel. While the COVID pandemic forced us to abandon all actual travel, the creative and tireless work of the Journeys faculty leaders has resulted in a range of outstanding global learning opportunities that involve renowned international scholars and activists, bestselling authors, local community leaders, and innovative forms of synchronous and asynchronous engagement. We look forward to the time when the class of 2024 will be able to explore the world through study abroad travel. For now, we keep rooting for them as they lay the foundation for the global perspectives that will guide their learning.

Here are the topics of this year’s thirteen Journeys courses with a few examples from their virtual itineraries.

Journeys Astronomy and Discovery, led by Dr. Amy Lovell, will engage students in global learning by connecting with sites and communities in Florida and Puerto Rico. The Peak Week schedule includes 3D video tours of the Kennedy Space Center and the ISS as well as meetings with scholars and students from the University of Central Florida who work on the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Workshops with Puerto Rican community representatives, with a historian of the Puerto Rican diaspora, and with local environmental groups in both Florida and Puerto Rico will enable students to learn about local and regional sustainability efforts.

Journeys Diversity and Health, led by Dr. Erin Bradley, provides students with insights into the public health system of Ecuador and Florida. During virtual visits and workshops with the Otavalo Health Clinic and the Chota Valley Cooperative in Ecuador, students will learn about indigeneous approaches to medicine. Conversations with the Overtown Green Haven Project in Miami will enrich students’ knowledge about the connection between environmental conservation and public health. Through virtual meetings with the Ecuadorian League of South Florida students will learn about the global cultural links between the U.S. and Ecuador.

Happy Study Abroad Day 2021!

The COVID pandemic frames this anniversary in a completely new way. In the Center for Global Learning we know that so many of you had to cancel or shift plans, we know that you are longing for the moment to pick up your delayed dreams of studying abroad for a summer, a semester, or the academic year. All we can say right now is — “Hang in there, we are with you!”

Despite the pandemic, global learning is continuing and it might help to take some solace from the fact that education and learning are part of the “long game.” We want to mark this unique Study Abroad Day with a special episode on the Agnes Scott Leading Everywhere podcast series. Listen to Hannah Brendell ‘2021 conversing with alums Na Than ’13 and Tehseen Dossul ’11 how being proficient in multiple languages has helped them navigate different work and learning environments and prepare for international careers.

IEW 2020: Global Learning, Careers, and Languages

Intercultural competencies and foreign language proficiency are among the most coveted skills in the global work environment. Join the Center for Global Learning for a roundtable conversation with two international Agnes Scott alums on Tuesday, November 17, 1-2pm EST. Nga Than, who graduated in 2013, and Tehseen Dossul, who graduated in 2011, will talk about how being proficient in multiple languages has helped them to navigate different work and learning environments and prepare for international careers.

Nga Than studied mathematics, economics, and history at Agnes Scott College and spent a year in Germany researching the Vietnamese expatriate community. Nga Than is currently pursuing a PhD in Sociology at the Graduate Center of CUNY. Nga Than speaks Chinese, Vietnamese, and German.

Tehseen Mariam Dossul graduated from Agnes Scott in 2011. She speaks Urdu, Hindi, English, German and is currently learning French. After studying at Agnes Scott and in Germany, Tehseen is currently a manager at Amboss, a medical technology company with offices in New York City, Berlin, and Cologne, Germany.

International Education Week 2020

Celebrate International Education Week with a series of events co-sponsored by The Gué Pardue Hudson Center forLeadership and Service, Center for Global Learning, The Gay Johnson McDougal Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Student Involvement, International Student Association, Public Health Club, and Hillel.

Highlights of the week include an International Film Series, Global Health Trivia, ISA Cooking Challenge, Papel Picado Craft Making, and Global Shabbat Service.

A special feature will include the NAFSA Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization Presidential Panel and Award Recognition featuring President Zak on Wednesday, November 18 from 1-2:30pm EST. Agnes Scott College received the 2020 Paul Simon Spotlight Award for its Global Journeys Program.

SUMMIT Specialization Spring 2021 Courses

Join the SUMMIT Faculty Coordinators for Global Learning and Leadership on November 5, 2020 at 6pm EST for a virtual forum to learn about new specialization courses for the Spring semester. Get a sneak preview of LDR 200, “Building a Healthy Campus” (taught by public health professor Amy Patterson), and of the brand-new GBL 201 seminar, “Race and the Other” (taught by anthropology professor Doug Falen). Learn more about how the SUMMIT specialization in Global and Leadership learning can improve your resume, share your experiences of your specializations thus far, and (virtually) connect with peers in the same pursuit.

Virtual Global Internships & Study Abroad programs – Spring 2021

Can’t travel right now? You can still participate in a variety of virtual programs abroad that include intensive foreign language programs, credit-bearing internships, and service-based coursework. There are ASC study abroad awards available for some of these virtual programs.

Through the remote internship option, students will immerse themselves in the professional culture of another country, while developing skills required to effectively work with individuals and organizations from cultural backgrounds other than their own—competencies needed for every workplace. You will build your resumé, expand your global network, and acquire global competencies.

There are part-time and full-time internships for all career fields, that vary in length and have different start dates.

Global Journeys 2021 Courses Announced

The Center for Global Learning is excited to present the Global Journeys courses for Spring 2021! We know that many of you have been waiting eagerly for this moment, and so have we. As the COVID pandemic keeps impacting global travel, the Journeys faculty and our providers have worked hard to adapt the courses. Global learning is more important than ever, and we want to make sure that all of you receive the introduction into global learning that enables you to become the global leaders the world needs.

All Journeys courses feature a domestic U.S. destination that groups will visit if travel is possible and also a set of global site connections that faculty and students will engage with through interactive, virtual learning formats. This course design provides flexibility and mitigates the risks while also ensuring that all students will progress in their academic trajectory with a rich and meaningful global immersion experience.

With this strong foundation in global learning, all students will be ready to engage in subsidized faculty-led Global Study Tours and award-funded semester-long study abroad throughout their time at Agnes Scott and as soon as international travel will be feasible again.
